Fort Lauderdale: a Tennis Capital

Tennis has long been a major part of life in Fort Lauderdale and much of South Florida, a region that has produced champions like Chris Evert, Andy Roddick and our very own Harold Solomon.

The area hosts one of the world’s most prestigious tennis championships at the Crandon Park Tennis Center on Key Biscayne, where the Sony Ericsson Open is played each spring and attracts top players from across the globe.

Junior tennis tournaments are frequently scheduled in the region, and offer opportunities for emerging players to match their tennis talents against other young champions.

Weather has been a major factor in making South Florida one of the world’s pre-eminent tennis locales.  With year-round temperatures averaging in the 70s and 80s (21C-31C), South Florida affords more days of outdoor tennis play than most other parts of the world.

The region’s growing cultural diversity and international appeal help to bring top tennis players here from throughout the world.  Extensive domestic and international flights are available at both Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Miami International Airports. In addition to English, multiple languages are commonly spoken in South Florida, including Spanish, Portuguese, French and many more.

South Florida also offers fine beaches and related watersports activities, including boating, fishing, diving, Jet-ski riding, canoeing, kayaking, and more.  A wide range of other activities are available, such as biking, horseback riding, physical fitness training and shopping at many of the world’s most extensive retail complexes, including The Galleria and Sawgrass Mills.

Cultural activities include popular music performances at several venues within a short distance from the Solomon Tennis complex.  Other presentations run the gamut from comedy to dance to jazz and other music genres.  Recognized museums offer a range of regular and special displays.

South Florida has one of the highest ratios of restaurants per capita in the nation.  Options vary from fast food to elegant dining, and meet various tastes and cost considerations.  The Solomon Tennis facility is 10 minutes from Fort Lauderdale’s renowned Las Olas Boulevard.

Nightlife options abound throughout the region, whether in Fort Lauderdale’s many club districts, at the Seminole Hard Rock complex, or nearby on South Beach.
